Access Method: Is a set of rules governing how the network nodes share transmission medium the rules for sharing among computer are similar to the rules for sharing among humans in that they both ball down to a pair of fundamental philosophies

These philosophies are principles defining the three most important types of media access method.
In its pure form contention means that the computers are contending for use of the transmission medium in any computer in the network can transmit at any time (First Come First Server).
Polling:
One device is responsible for polling the other devices whether they are ready for the transmission or reception of data.
Token Passing
The computer take transmission medium as you can imagine contention based access method can given rise to situation in which two or more network nodes try to broad cast at the same time and the signals collide specification for contention base access method including procedure for how to avoid collisions and what to do if a collision occurs.
On most contention based network, the nodes are basically equal. No mode as a higher priority then other nodes. New access method called demand priority, however resolves contention and collagens and in so doing accounts for data type priority.
